Bold and the Beautiful
By Rachel Vogan
As the drab days all seem to blend into one it’s amazing how excited we get when the sky is blue and the sun does shine. There are plenty of great plants around which can help lift our spirits too.
I like to brighten up the place with potted colour as my garden at the moment is about the size of three small-parked cars, rather than an airport landing strip as it was a few months ago. I am adjusting slowly but I am overdue in getting my brightly coloured poppies in, which were a real hit last year they just flowered endlessly until Christmas.
If its plants you are looking for then there are a few really eye-catching fancy foliage plants that always steal the show at this time of year.
Leucadendron Safari Sunset seems to be the star of the show at the moment. Her bright red flowers and foliage are grabbing attention all over town. If you are looking to choose this for the garden make sure you have a warm sunny spot with good drainage. Prune hard back once flowering has finished to encourage a good show of flowers for next season.
Astelia Alpine Ruby is another plant that should be on stage with its rich ruby red foliage streaked with a shimmering silver. A close relative to Astelia is Silver Spear Alpine Ruby is a hardy native hybrid that thrives in both sun and shade. Height and width approx 1metre..
I could list more and more plants but to be honest I know that you would soon be turning the page so to condense it down a bit here is a list of other plants that really do remain bold and beautiful through the cool months. Camellia’s, Polyanthus, Pansies and Violas, Succulents, Grasses, Helleborus, flaxes and grasses, Nandinas and Leucadendrons – the list does go on.
