To most guys roses mean just two things: they look pretty and smell
nice. But to others (particularly the more sweet-natured kind) roses can
mean so much more.
A bloke's guide to the meanings of roses
Red - for romance; perfect for passion
So red means love right? Well yes, but the red rose is a symbol of
enduring, romantic love. So, unless you want to put a ring on it, it’s a
case of better dead, than red. Otherwise, like a red rag to a bull,
this little petal may draw your requited one to closer quarters than you
intend.
A good point to remember about red roses is that they are best served as
singles. If you get any grief about being cheap, just say: “a single
red rose says ‘I love you’ more eloquently than any bunch or bouquet”.
It may not work but it’s worth a try.
Red roses also depict beauty and courage.
Peach – sweet as peaches, or plain of intention
This is a rose that can be misread. I once sent a peach rose to a lady
friend, having no idea of its meaning. Truth be told, I chose peach
simply because the florist was all out of red! The response was ‘I’m
glad you’re so thankful.’ this confused me greatly until I discovered
that peach roses stand for gratitude; at least that’s the meaning she
was aware of. But they can represent ‘closing of the deal’!
Peach roses also characterise sincerity and sympathy.
Lavender – lavish in love
Lavender (or purple for those of us who refuse to recognise ‘puce’ as a
real colour) roses represent majesty, glory and abundance.
Lilac (pale purple or mauve – see comment above) roses indicate instant
attraction or love at first sight. If you send a lady these after a
first date, and she identifies with this meaning, I’m sure you’ll have
it made in the pale moonlight; or should that be shade?
Either way light
purple roses provide all the perks of sweet nothings.
Be careful though, if the roses are not pale and just plain purple, you
may be stuck, as the darker variety can also mean ‘I will always love
you’!
White – for purity in person or intention
We all know white roses signify purity or innocence. Now, while in some
cases that may be appreciated, in others it may come across as some kind
of joke, so be careful!
But did you know (and I’m guessing some don’t – as I didn’t) they can
also denote purity of intentions. So the person to whom you’re sending
these can be less a ‘white woman’ and more a ‘scarlet lady’ and you’re
still on safe ground; providing she’s the type to believe you’re
intentions are purely honourable.
White is always right on the wedding night.
Check our Plant of the Week section next week when we will conclude our 'bloke's guide to the meaning of roses' and feature thankful pink, enthusiastic orange and the ever popular friendly yellow.
Remember, if you’re looking to win big with a lady this Valentine's Day, you’d best
make the right pick of the bunch to avoid saying the wrong thing with
flowers!
