The cosmos is a wonderful background colour maker for your garden due to both its height and its long flowering period. The plant, which can grow as tall as 2 meters, will normally produce large crimson, soft pink and white flowers from summer right through until it is stopped by the frost. The cosmos is also prolific in seeds. These should be planted in early spring to avoid the last of the frosts or alternatively they can be started indoors. Germination is usually between 5-10 days.
