According to new research you’d have to be nuts to turn down a ginger! That is if you’re one of more than 200,000 New Zealanders who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

A study, conducted at the University of Sydney, has revealed that ginger has the potential to aid in the management of high blood sugar levels.

Professor of pharmaceutical chemistry, Basil Roufogalis, says extracts from Buderim branded ginger were able to increase the uptake of glucose into muscle cells, allowing them to operate independently of blood insulin levels.

“Under normal conditions the blood glucose level is strictly maintained within a narrow range, and skeletal muscle is a major site of glucose uptake in the body,” Professor Roufogalis says. “It is hoped that these promising results for managing blood glucose levels can be examined further in human clinical trials.”
