The Auckland Flower Show
The Auckland Flower show is open and the awards and accolades are beginning to flow. The judge’s decisions are made and I can tell you that it was no easy task, with plenty of banter and ratification taking place.
There are plenty of show highlights including the ever popular exhibition gardens which feature a wacky Armagarden interpretation to a beautiful wedding garden. The new courtyard and planted border gardens have some delightful designs and planting combinations. The floral displays will certainly be crowd favorites due the magnitude of the displays and garden designs. It’s simply breath taking and being indoors it can be enjoyed at anytime and a good choice if the weather packs up.
The courtyard garden category has been developed to show case what can be achieved in a small space. While the planted border gardens show case plants, with part of the design criteria being that the gardens need to be 90% plant material.
With the outdoor gardens, courtyard gardens and planted borders the edible garden theme is a common thread with many. Trina Tully once again has designed an innovative garden blending edible and flowering and bold textured plants. The two Matts, from Watch this Space Landscapes, quickly rose to fame by exhibiting at the previous 2 Ellerslie flower shows have designed a slick outdoor room that would entice many to replicate at home. Naturally Native has created a brilliant garden called Moved by Tides which features numerous native plants that reside on our coastlines. When I was judging this garden I felt I wanted to take my shoes off and lie in the sand dunes and enjoy the sun and serenity the garden exuded.
Cleopatra is the vegetable design and she is a sight to behold. Visit our slide show featuring her gracious figure being fanned by her ‘kidney bean’ covered servant.
If retail therapy is up your alley you will have plenty to empty your wallet on, many things I have not spotted before.
The show runs from 20th – 23rd of November www.theflowershow.co.nz
We have setup several image side shows of the gardens, check them out below:
