Some Aucklanders have been ‘green with envy’ at Christchurch’s reputation as the garden city. However, with a landmark garden project at Wynyard Quarter in the works, the south may soon face growing competition!
Developed by the Garden to Table Trust and Waterfront Auckland, the concept plans were unveiled this week for a new edible garden and kitchen classroom facility.
When completed, the site will include 100 raised garden beds on a 1500sqm lot. It will be used by children from inner-city schools, provide headquarters for the trust and will be an events’ venue for the community.
Garden to Table Trust founder and chair, Catherine Bell, says she is thrilled to see the scheme taking shape.
“This amazing project has been in the planning for some time now and it’s extraordinary to finally see it in colour,” Catherine says.” We’re working very hard behind the scenes to raise the essential and quite substantial funds required to finance the project. We are also seeking partners and sponsors to assist with funding.
“We’re extremely grateful to those who have already come on board to support the project and we welcome interest from other companies looking to support a positive cause that helps our children grow and learn.”
The Garden to Table initiative offers children the opportunity to learn how to grow and cook their own vegetables and fruits in gardens and home-style kitchens.
