Autumn Lawn Care - time to renovate tired lawns.
Autumn is the time to sow, fertilise and repair your lawn.
Summer has a habit of leaving its mark on the garden; it’s often first spotted in the lawn with dried off burnt looking patches that seem to increase in size week after week. With the change of season autumn brings welcome rains and generally cooler air and soil temperatures which are conducive to healthier looking lawns.
Lawns have numerous recreational and health benefits. They provide a place to exercise or meditate an area for the children to play or a space to entertain and relax. Mowing the lawn is a good form of exercise and cheaper than the gym. Research shows 30 minutes of lawn mowing burns approximately 200 calories! I wonder how many calories is in a glass of sauvignon blanc? Just as well I have a large lawn to mow. Financially, a well kept and maintained lawn has proved over and over to owners that it adds value to properties.
The environmental benefits of having a lawn are often over looked. The grass in your lawn helps stabilize the soil and keeps the soil alive and healthy due to the constant microbial activity. It prevents soil erosion from heavy rains; you may have noticed that bare patches of land or soil often erode during heavy rains. By planting a lawn you reduce water run off, another benefit which allows the rain water to filter back down to the water table.
Autumn Lawn Tips for Existing Lawns:
Essentially in autumn you need to weed and feed your lawn to prepare them for winter.
Feeding: Apply Greenkeeper’s Gold lawn fertiliser, as the name suggests it’s what the professional’s use which is now available for home gardeners. It is a unique blend of slow release fertilisers and Saturaid wetting agent which work to keep lawns thicker and greener for longer. Contains sulphur, iron and zinc, which encourage a healthy deep green colour along with disease resistance for up to 3 months.
Weeding: There is nothing worse than getting a prickle in your foot when outside on the grass. Autumn is the best time to eradicate weeds, before they set seed and spread all over the lawn. Use Weedstrike Combination Lawn Spray to kill lawn weeds. It is one of the only sprays that control both onehunga weed and prickles. This combination spray also controls cats’ ear, chamomiles, clovers, dandelions, docks, onehunga weed, sorrel, thistles and other broadleaf weeds in lawns. Best control of Onehunga weed is with spring applications well before the prickles become a problem.
Patching: You may notice you have some bare patches in your lawn, these may be in high traffic areas or where the dog decided he must bury a bone. It’s easy to patch up these areas with fresh lawn seed and within a few months it will look as good as new. A simple product to look for is SuperStrike Patch pack. It contains enough seed to patch up those pesky areas and in the right conditions you will have new grass appearing in a week.
