Page 1 of 68 If you haven't heard much from me this past week it's because I've been doing my civic duty - yes, jury service in the district court. What an experience - and a fascinating one at that. We were, perhaps, best described as a packet of mixed seeds - every genus and colour which made for a variegated bunch of jurors.
You know, most of us try to think of every which way to escape what often seems to be an onerous duty interfering with family, work and play. But really, 12 good men (or women) and true are at the heart of our justice system and though sometimes the law may seem to be one hot potato, it helps keep a lot of us honest - or at least I like to think so.
So without going into the whys and wherefores of our judicial system, if readers are called, see it as a job much like weeding - it has to be done and it keeps the garden in trim.
See you all next week,
Helen Perry - Garden-NZ team
