New TVNZ7 show seeks enthusiastic gardener
written by JoeNewOld , December 07, 2011
We are searching for a young enthusiastic gardener with a flourishing inner city garden to appear on a new TVNZ7 show profiling the resurgence of gardening in New Zealand.

Someone passionate about gardening, outgoing, and comfortable on camera would be perfect. It would be great, though not necessary, if they are also interested in heritage seeds.

If interested, or know anyone who might be, please email me some info about yourself and your garden, and perhaps a photo.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yakon tuber
written by kimarg , November 26, 2011
Friend told me about this plant which has a sweet tasing tuber. The intereting thing is that you dont have to harvest the whole plant, but instead you can dig down and pull off as many as you want and leave the growing tuber. Anyone know more about this plant?

Old Fashioned Cinerarias Unavailable
written by jbeardsall , November 20, 2011
I'm in the North Island & I have been unable to find seeds or plants of the old fashioned tall Cinerarias over the last two years. I saved & grew seed from the dwarf plants I bought hoping the next generation would be taller - but no luck! Does anyone know where I can get them?
To Vegemadness
written by Lyndafinn , October 07, 2011
Most pot plants like to be repotted in their dormant season, so it will depend on the plant. Chain cactus, for instance are dormant in warmer weather, so now (October-February) would be an ideal time to do that.
If I am not sure about what a plant likes and when I do a Google search, making sure I look at New Zealand websites.
African Violets don't like to be repotted too often, they love to be pot bound but you can take cuttings by cutting off leaves - with a length of stem, and standing that in a narrow container so that just the stalk is wet. It will soon throw out roots and you can repot it. I start mine off in the tiniest plant pots - the ones I also use as egg cups :),

I hope some of this is helpful.

Topiary Daphne
written by keen2learn , July 17, 2011
I have been given a Daphne bush which the ladies at work have told me is a topiary I would like to know what I need to do to look after it. It is currently in a pot and I was also wondering what type of plants I could put in the bottom as a companion plant.

Thanks

When is the best time of the year to re pot indoor pot plants? I know its personal preference, but how long do you think before I should re new the soil again.

Thanks in advance
Buxus Blight
written by ryderpak , June 17, 2011
I have tried to nurture my Buxus over the last year from this terrible thing but I think it has the better of me at the moment. Most of my mature Buxus hedging is showing blight and unfortunatley my new buxus hedge looks like it has been effected by it too.
Is there anything anyone can suggest that might save the hedges.
I would hate to pull them all out and start again.
Funnily the varigated box hedge is not showing any signs of the blight. Is there a reason for this.
Thanks
Japanese Maple
written by k8hancock , May 20, 2011
Hi,
I have just planted a mixture of Hostas and Hellebores underneath a Japanese Maple (interspersed with some Liriope) and am now worried that this might have been a bad idea after reading that Maple's have a tendency to kill anything underneath. Does anyone have any ideas on whether or not I have made a good choice for underplanting?

Many thanks
