Vibrant ViolaViola is a very easy to grow and popular flowering plant with gardeners worldwide, native to the southern hemisphere.
There are around 400-500 different species. Most Viola species are tiny perennial plants, some are annual plants, while a few are small shrubs. A number of species are grown for their ornamental flowers in borders and rock gardens.
Typically the plants have heart-shaped and scalloped leaves, and flower colours vary in the genus, ranging from violet, as their common name suggests, through various shades of blue, yellow, white, and cream. Besides, with the flourishing breeding industry, many cultivars and hybrids have been bred in a bigger spectrum of colours.
The plants are best grown from seeds that are kept moist and transplanted in 6 weeks. A sunny and well drained spot is beneficial, but one that offers protection from the afternoon sun.
Feeding fertiliser fortnightly helps to grow healthier plants. Take care to water them during dry periods, once or twice per week, and keep them well weeded. To promote good blooming, keep removing the spent blooms.
Generally Violas don’t have many problems with insects and diseases, but might need protection from snails.
Violas have many uses – to decorate salads, to flavor cream and desserts and as a fragrance source for perfumes.
