Calendula is an easy to grow annual flower belonging to the daisy family Asteraceae, and also known as ‘pot marigold’. This plant produces orange, yellow, and lemon coloured flowers on long stems.
Calendula plants grow well in rich and well-drained soils and can usually tolerate average soils. But the use of plenty of compost will help soil quality and result in much healthier plants and flowers. You can also add a general purpose fertiliser once a month.
Once established, the Calendula plant doesn’t require much attention. Adding mulch around the plants will help keep weeds down. The plant will not be harmed by a light frost but will succumb to heavy frosts or freezes.
Aphids are the most common insect problem with Calendulas. An insecticidal soap or repellent offers an effective treatment in such cases.
Studies suggest that Calendula extracts have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Calendula in suspension or in tincture is used topically to treat acne, reduce inflammation and control bleeding .
