Broccoli is a plant of the Kale family Brassicaceae (formerly Cruciferae). It most closely resembles cauliflower, which is a different cultivar group of the same species. Many varieties of broccoli are perennial.

Once known as New Zealand’s favourite vegetable, this popular green is easy to grow and if well looked after will provide you with produce for up to five months.

Varieties:

The Sprouting and head forming broccoli types are generally available at your local garden centre. Sprouting broccoli has a larger number of heads with many thin stalks. Purple and white varieties are usually available at seed stockists.

When, where and how to plant:

Broccoli can be grown all year round in many areas.

The best ground is a deep loam which has not been over-manured, and the best crops are usually grown on new land. Prepare ground well prior to planting or sowing seeds. Add compost and blend in well. A good watering to settle the soil about the roots should be given when the planting is finished.

You can either buy seedlings or sow your own seeds. When sowing seeds, you will find they germinate best during spring and autumn.

Growing guide

The pests which attack broccoli are the same that attack cabbage. Once seedlings appear or are planted, apply slug and snail bait around the plants. Apply liquid fertiliser each month. Water well over dry periods. Crop should be ready in two months from planting.

Continuous harvesting will ensure the long cropping season. Aphids and white butterflies can be a problem, spray with a good bug spray.

Harvest:

Broccoli needs to be harvested before the flowers begin to open.

Cut the head of the broccoli with a sharp knife once the head has formed. By cutting the broccoli this way you will encourage new heads of broccoli to grow. Once broccoli flowers the plant will die.

How to use:

Broccoli is high in vitamin C and has multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties, and small amounts of selenium as well as significant dietary fibre.

Use as a vegetable green, in stir-fries, in soups and in pasta dishes. Broccoli will freeze for 2-3 months.
