Look what’s cooking in the Coromandel!

cookiesgarden3.jpgWhile many people choose to live in the big smoke, there’s simply no place like the country when it comes to glorious gardens, as one Garden-NZ reader explains.

Keith, also known as Cookie, has been cultivating his garden in the resort town of Matarangi on the Coromandel peninsula for more than 20 years.

“We built our bach here because we were attracted to the sheer beauty of the Coromandel with its dazzling beaches and stunning scenery. Since my wife and I retired we spend most of our time here and cookiesgarden1.jpgwhen we pull into the driveway it’s certainly our garden that makes this house feel like home.”

Cookie says his garden in Auckland is simply no match for his Coromandel oasis.

“We do have a small garden in Auckland but it’s just not the same. We have made the most of our city space but it’s still surrounded by the dreaded suburbs! There’s no substitute for a garden surrounded by nature.”

The keen gardener says, due to the sandy consistency of the soil, gardening has, at times, proved to be tough... growing.

“The soil can be tricky but with a little compost, water and imagination, through trial and error we’ve managed to overcome this problem and create a welcoming and cosy garden.”

Thanks to Cookie for sharing his garden with us.
